Orbitz is a noncarbonated fruit-flavored beverage introduced in 1997, made by the company Clearly Canadian Beverage Corporation. The product disappeared due to poor sales. "It was marketed as a 'texturally enhanced alternative beverage'" with small, colorful, edible balls suspended in the drink. The drink received mainly negative reviews, as many found the concept to be over-the-top and caused confusion among consumers. The drink was supposed to imitate the appearance of a lava-lamp. "The majority of the introductory flavor combinations were complex, making it difficult to grasp exactly what it was going to taste like."
Although the concept of this product was unique and innovative, it didn't appeal to many taste-wise. The product also brought back a sense of nostalgia, as lava lamps were popular in the past. While the idea can be seen as a good / innovative one, the taste was the downfall, ultimately resulting in product failure. This product can definitely be improved upon. More marketing research should have been put into place before selling the product. In conclusion, more planning as well as research could have potentially improved the performance of the product in the market.
