Advertising Evaluations

In class, we watched several different advertisements and evaluated the techniques in which these advertisements used.

Dumb Ways to Die: This advertisement relates to Newell's "Marketing Training: How to Pick a Slogan That's Motivating & Memorable" video, as the tune of the song is easy to remember due to its catchy tune and simple words. The phrase "Dumb Ways to Die" is the title of the game they are advertising, and is used throughout the song. The advertisement gained popularity in 2013, as many people were memorizing words to the song. The video can be seen as humorous and appeals to many, especially children/younger teens, evidently the reason for its success.

Nike Jogger: This advertisement demonstrates techniques used in Newell's "How to Build Marketing that Inspires" video. The commercial shows a less-fit boy running up a hill towards the camera while the narrator describes greatness throughout the video. The video emphasizes the theme of greatness, and how anyone is capable of achieving it. This relates to the 3 minute emotional advertising video stated above because it is made to inspire/motivate, appealing to many people who may feel an emotional connection to the people/situations depicted in the advertisement, ultimately resulting in this ad's success.

ALS Foundation: The techniques used in this advertisement relate to Newell's "How to Build Marketing that Inspires" video. The ad focuses on the emotional aspect, as it is able to spark deep emotions in viewers. The advertisement (case study) enforces people to help fund the ALS foundation as it shows the clips of people who have died from the disease, creating emotional connections to viewers. This ad's success is due to the emotional connections it created and how it appealed to many.

Volkswagen "Don't make up and drive": This advertisement is a clear representation of the tactics described in Newell's "The Risks & Rewards of Shock Marketing" video. The ad begins with a makeup tutorial. This continues for most of the video; however, near the end, a crashing noise pops up and the wall behind the person applying makeup crashes, imitating a car accident. This is important because it shocks the viewers, as it is unexpected. However, this is what makes the ad easily remembered, even after watching it just once, which is essentially the reason for its success.
