Math Investigation 4 Reflection Questions

1. Give 3 examples of fractions with decimal representations that terminate

a) 1/2         b) 4/5        c) 1/4
   ~ 0.5          ~ 0.8       ~ 0.25
2. Give 3 examples of fractions with decimal representations that repeat

a) 1/7           b) 1/3         c) 8/11
  ~  0.142857   ~ 0.3...        ~ 0.72...

3. Give three examples of irrational numbers, including 1 irrational number greater than 5
a) √10 (3.16227766017)
b) √2 (1.41421356237)
c) √5 (2.2360679775)
These are irrational because irrational means numbers that cannot be put into a fraction or a ratio. These numbers here have no pattern and they do not repeat, so they cannot be made into a fraction.

4. How can you determine whether you can write a given decimal as a fraction?

If the decimal repeats, it can be written as a fraction. For example, the decimal 0.09090909..., it can be written as a fraction because the numbers are repeating in that specific pattern.
