Problem Solving

In science class, we did several different problem solving activities. The first activity was called, "Save Fred". We had only four paperclips to get the live preserver out from under the cup (boat), and onto Fred the gummy worm, without dropping him. My partner and I discussed the best way to hold the cup, Fred, and the life preserver with our four paperclips. My partner held fred up with two paperclips, while I picked the cup up and took out the life preserver. We stretched the life preserver out so Fred could go through. The second activity was called, "The Chopstick Challenge".  In our groups, we had to take turns piling cubes up into a tower with chopsticks, only we had to use our non- dominant hand. Our plan was to carefully pile the cubes on top of each other while straightening the tower so it wouldn't fall. The last activity, "All Aboard", was an activity involving the whole class working together. But our class didn't discuss our plan at all. Right away, we rushed to the boat and got on,  and we all fitted on it!
